Practical advice from 30 years behind the counter

Independent guidance for everyday pool owners

Straight answers from thirty years behind a pool shop counter.

We built this site to write down the advice we've given across the counter for three decades — so you can find it before you buy, not after.

Shirley & Tom Springsteen

With over 30 years in pool maintenance and pool supplies, we'd like to think we know a thing or two about keeping a backyard pool in top shape. We're semi-retired now, but still have a wealth of experience in pumps, chemicals, and everyday pool maintenance — and this site is where we've put all of it down in writing. Got a question a guide didn't answer? We'd genuinely like to hear it.

Our story

Backyard Pool Tips is the online extension of a pool shop that's been open for thirty years. In that time we've fitted, fixed, and argued the merits of more pumps, filters, covers, and chlorinators than we can count — and answered the same handful of questions from pool owners more times than we can count either.

Most of those questions have simple, honest answers. But a lot of what shows up when you search for pool advice online is either written to sell a specific product, or written by someone who's never actually stood in front of a pump wall trying to figure out why the pressure gauge won't budge. We wanted somewhere to put the actual answers.

What we do differently

Every buying guide on this site starts with the pool, not the product. We ask what size the pool is, what climate it's in, and how much time the owner actually wants to spend maintaining it — then work out which products make sense for that situation, and which are more than anyone needs.

  • We compare products by what they cost to run, not just what they cost to buy.
  • We say when a cheaper option is genuinely fine, even if that means a shorter guide.
  • We revisit guides as product lineups change, rather than leaving discontinued models at the top of a "best of" list forever.
  • We keep product links separate from the actual verdict, so the recommendation isn't built around the link.

How the site makes money

Backyard Pool Tips is a participant in the Amazon Associates program. When you buy something through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. It's what keeps the guides free and ad-clutter to a minimum.

That said, commission doesn't decide what gets recommended. Full detail on how that works is on our affiliate disclosure page.
